Our motivation, where has it gone? It was just right here then poof. Gone.
Every time we lose our motivation for our jobs, school, and projects we go looking for it like Sherlock Holmes on a cold case.
And with good reason, after all, we do need it to get work done and be productive but diagnosing the issue is a bit tricky.
No one has the same problems, and no one will have the same answers. But lucky for us, though, there is a list of usual suspects. Loss of passion, no production, wasted time. It happens to all of us but how long it affects us is entirely different.
No flame burns forever, and not all motivation is going to stand the test of time. But you have to get back in the game. These hacks can be what you need to boost your motivation and get you headed in the right direction.
1. Set up your Workspace
Our surroundings dictate more of our mood that you think. If you’re surrounded by things or people that distract and bother you, it may be time to switch it up.
Inspiration can come from the simplest of places. Sometimes it might help to put some thoughtful artwork up or post your favorite quote. Find your thing, create your habitat and make your workspace into a creative paradise.
For example, Timothy Ferris the best-selling author of The 4 Hour work week noticed that he writes his best work between the hours of 1 A.M. to 4 A.M with a glass of green tea and his laptop.
What works for him may or may not work for you, but you have to find your sweet spot and double down on it. Maybe you like working on projects at a coffee shop or a library. Find out your working style and make sure you cater to it.
2. Set up for a Shake Down
Sometimes your lack of motivation isn’t your surrounding; maybe you need a mental shakedown. Someone to get your attention and kick you around a bit. You’ll be surprised what some yelling will do to get you out of bed.
Try pulling up some motivational videos on youtube and see if you don’t want to run into a wall afterward. These videos can fire you up and get you thinking like a winner.
If you have trouble going to the gym or finishing that project you started, play this and tell me it didn’t get you going.
In this internet era, there are digital mentors online everywhere. Find a motivational speaker you enjoy, and one that can rattle the cage. Whether it’s an athlete or entrepreneur these people are highly competitive and they know what to say to raise the bar. Use their words as a refill whenever you’re running low in your motivation reserve. Their words of encouragement will give the lift you need to regain your confidence.
3. Remove Yourself from the Situation
A change of scenery can work wonders. We all hit the proverbial wall and sometimes a bit of relaxation is all we need for a reset. There’s nothing wrong with getting up, stretching your legs, and breathing in some fresh air.
Go for a walk, get outside, or do something mindless for a bit. We are delicate creatures and our focus only lasts so long.
Recharge your motivation by doing what you love. Get away from your work a bit and enjoy your hobby.
Whatever you do it will get your mind off work and will give you a mental refresher so that when you return, you’ll be mentally reset and ready to hit the ground running.
4. Take Care of your Physical Needs
This is commonly overlooked. Just like a car needs maintenance, your body needs the essentials. Food, water, and exercise. All three of these are necessary to keep you at your physical peak and operating at a high level.
All high performing machine needs to be taken care of, and your body is no different. Take care of your body and it will take care of you. Eat healthy foods and plan your meals. It’s easy to skip breakfast and forget lunch when you’re deep into a project, but you shouldn’t neglect the necessities. It’s the energy that keeps you going and if you don’t eat you know what follows.
Exercise is a great way to boost energy levels and increase focus. Whenever you finish a good workout out you have endorphins pumping that get you in a good mood and keep you feeling great. Use this time to ride the wave into your work and your production will rise.
Being tired is another overlooked component of the motivation thief. If you get a crappy night of sleep, you’ll probably have a crappy day at work. Pretty simple here, for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. Make sure you get the sleep that you need and keep your body well rested to be more productive.
Lack of motivation and ambition comes in several different forms. They come and go wreaking havoc on anyone not replenishing their motivation bank. Don’t let these bandits take control of your life. When you notice you lack a motivation use these tips to get you back on track.
